Five Ways to Minimize Renovation Fatigue

Whether you’re undertaking a minor renovation or an extensive one, the daily routine interruptions, dust, and snafus often associated with such construction can leave you drained and weary of turning your fixer-upper into the home of your dreams. However, fear not, fellow renovators…

Here are five ways to minimize renovation fatigue:

  1. Buy your finishes in advance, including plumbing fixtures, tile, sinks, toilets, countertops, and cabinets (if not inset) so the materials are onsite when they’re needed. The biggest rookie mistake, and I’ve made it, is to wait for rough-in valves to arrive once your bathroom has been demolished.
  2. Check-in with your contractor at the beginning of each week to know when workers will be or won’t be in your home. During the middle of a long renovation, a day without hammers is a true reprieve, and it’s especially sweet when you can look forward to that day in advance and plan accordingly.
  3. Budget for a cleaning crew during the dustiest of weeks. I promise this is money well spent! Dust will find it’s way into everything, and if you try and tackle it yourself, you will increase your stress level by ten fold.
  4. Limit construction hours to those that meet your family’s needs. For example, if your kids go to bed at 6:00 pm, which mine do, ask that workers end their day by 5:00 pm. Now, on the flip side…I’m sorry to say that limiting work hours during the day when you child naps isn’t going to fly with most, if any, contractors. So, my advice is to remain reasonable and ask that they respect your mornings, evenings, and weekends if you so wish.
  5. Plan a vacation. Whether you take a trip at the beginning of your renovation, when demolition is kicking up the most dust, or towards the end, when you still have four weeks to go without a kitchen, you won’t regret time away. Plus unfettered access to your home may accelerate your renovation timeline.
