A room of one’s own

After leaving college I spent nine months as a secretary in Primrose Hill, London trying to decide what I was going to do with the rest of my life.  The winter was long and slow; when I wasn’t typing up rental agreements and keeping up with the filing I tried to write the first few chapters of a novel about an insomniac who would go on adventures in the middle of the night.  The novel didn’t progress and I lacked inspiration. A colleague suggested I quit my job and travel somewhere on the continent where I could rent a room somewhere warm and exotic with a beautiful view, and just write.

These days I’m not so bothered about a room with a view, I would just like a room of my own. I long for a space to breathe; a space to write, a space to be just mine. Even a nook, a corner where there will be no toys, or mess. A place of calm and escape from rest of the noise in the house. I would like a desk, some shelves, a comfortable chair and a beautiful print on the wall to inspire me, perhaps a plant to bring the outdoors in. I have been thinking about this for a while, so much so that I have over 60 pins on a Pinterest board devoted to A room of one’s own that has been going since 2012. When we move to our new house in May, I might just make this a reality.

Having a room of one’s own is a bit like spring cleaning for the brain. It doesn’t have to be a home office or study, it could be a studio space, a snug, a potting shed or a garden house at the end of the yard. Fill it with beautiful things that make you smile, objects to give you inspiration, accessories to help you feel motivated or just create a sense of peace and escapism.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh a personal space or even create a new one for yourself. If you are thinking of selling your property, why not stage a space purely for this purpose? With our busy lifestyles, so many people are looking for dedicated sacred or creative spaces in their homes. A lick of paint, a new piece of furniture or even some new pillows or plants can liven up a small space. Now is the time to rejuvenate your space and make it your own.
