Hunting and Gathering

May is here and, along with its colorful flowers and sunny days, my fellow hunter/gatherers and I welcome the kick off of  flea market season! This fantastic time of year runs from spring to fall and, here in SOMA, the first event is typically the VNA Rummage Sale in Far Hills. I have written about this particular sale before and, while this year felt a bit more sparse than it has in past years, I definitely had some luck and wasn’t disappointed.

To me, the VNA sale feels like a warm up for the larger markets in our area. I just returned from 2 days at the Brimfield Antique Flea Market in central Massachusetts and, while the VNA can feel hectic and chaotic, it pales in comparison to the massive crowds at Brimfield. Famous among flea market fans, Brimfield will not disappoint. With 3 shows a year, in May, July and September, there is ample opportunity to plan a trip. There is a massive collection of dealers selling anything you could possibly want and, let’s be honest, many things you didn’t even know you needed! The show focuses on antiques and collectables and is divided into fields, many of which have staggered openings. There are food trucks and lemonade stands and even a beer garden so you can come early and stay until closing. If you are looking for the full experience, and want to take your time, it’s best to plan on spending a few days at the show. There are lots of places to stay nearby but the good ones fill up in advance so, if you decide to go, it’s best to plan as far ahead as possible.

While completely exhausted and achy from hauling heavy things to and fro, I had a truly fantastic time. There were so many things I had to leave behind and a few treasures I regret not pulling the trigger on… but, overall, it was a great haul for clients, the Maplewood Mercantile and, of course, my own home. It is a confusing, overwhelming, thrilling experience and I highly recommend hitting it at least once in your life! I am already planning my trip for next spring. I may even do a day trip this summer… I can’t wait to go back!
